US soldiers raised the American flag on Mount Suribachi on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima in the Pacific as the Second World War was drawing to a close.
46 years ago (1972)
Palestinian hijackers freed all 172 passengers and crew of a Lufthansa jet after landing at an air strip in Yemen. It was later revealed the group, members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, were paid a £360,000 ransom.
