FIVE more officers have been investigated over their roles in the Hillsborough disaster.

The Crown Prosecution Service will announce within the next three weeks if charges will be brought against two suspects from West Midlands Police, the force which investigated the aftermath of the tragedy.

And the Independent Office for Police Conduct is also reviewing evidence relating to three former South Yorkshire Police officers.

The five former officers at the centre of the fresh probes will be told next month if they will face charges. It is understood relatives of those killed were told of the developments earlier this week. Ninety-six Liverpool fans died on the Leppings Lane terrace at the 1989 FA Cup semifinal between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, in Sheffield.

Last July, the CPS announced charges against six men.

They include ex-Chief Con Norman Bettison, 62, Graham Mackrell, 68, who was Sheffield Wednesday’s safety officer, former Chief Supt Donald Denton, 79, former Det Chief Insp Alan Foster, 71, and Peter Metcalf, 68, the force’s solicitor

David Duckenfield, 73, the police match commander on the day, faces 95 charges of gross negligence manslaughter.
