Unhinged detective Marcella has returned to unravel another grisly case but it’s the viewers who have been left scratching their heads.

Star Anna Friel was back for a second series of the ITV drama last week, pulling in 3.7million viewers. But with baffling storylines and ITV sound problems, you might have felt that, like Marcella herself, you’d had a blackout and missed half the plot. Fans complained on social media that, with two years since the first series, they did not understand one iota of what was going on. One minute our heroine is teetering on the edge of a high-rise building, the next there’s a dead schoolboy in a wall.

Then Marcella launched into a violent rage but had no memory of it. And that’s not to mention the flashbacks.

Star Anna, drawn into the row on Twitter, assured fans it was OK to be confused, insisting: “All will be explained.”
