Emergency aid for rough sleepers in cold blast

-

EMERGENCY shelters have been opened for the homeless as the cold blast kicks in.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “We’ve opened emergency shelters again to ensure Londoners sleeping rough have somewhere warm to stay through the cold weather.” Jon Sparkes, chief executive of homeless charity Crisis, urged other areas to do the same. He warned: “Rough sleeping when it’s this cold can be deadly.”

It comes after homeless Rob O’Connor was found dead in a shop doorway in Chelmsford, Essex after freezing temperatures there on Friday.

Charities called for donations of gloves, scarves, coats and hats for rough sleepers. Scarves and hats were left on benches and posts in a Keep Bristol Warm campaign.
