Jeremy Corbyn: My Brexit vision

Labour leader writes for The Mirror

- BY JEREMY CORBYN Leader of the Labour Party

LABOUR is the party of the new common sense on the economy, on public services and on Brexit.

Across the country, Tory-run councils are collapsing because of cuts. Homeless people are dying on our streets. In or out of the EU, we must deal with this reality – the failure of austerity.

The EU is not the root of all our problems and leaving it will not solve them all. The truth is, it’s in our hands. Brexit is what we make of it together.

The Tory Government has ruled out the option of a customs union. Labour has long argued it is a viable option. So we would seek to negotiate a new, comprehensive UK-EU customs union.

EXPLOITED

This would depend on Britain being able to negotiate agreement of new trade deals in our national interest. We would not countenance a deal that left Britain as a passive recipient of rules decided by others.

We would design immigration policy around the needs of our economy. When migrant workers come to Britain, they must not be exploited or used to undercut wages and working conditions.

But let me be crystal clear: it is not migrants who drive down wages, it is bad bosses and bad governments that would rather divide workers and weaken unions.

And Labour would negotiate a new and strong relationship with the European single market that would need to ensure we can take the essential steps to transform our economy for the 21st century.

We cannot be held back, inside or outside the EU, from supporting our industries, stopping the tide of privatisation or preventing employers importing cheap agency labour.

I know what Labour could do for this country and that our priorities are the right ones, to create a country that works for the many, not the few.
