Donor law won – but fight goes on

-

VERY well done to the Daily Mirror on your successful campaign to change organ donation law. Thanks to your tireless work, up to 500 lives a year will now be saved.

Anyone who knows someone who is on the transplant waiting list understands how much this new law means. It is literally the difference between life and death.

But organ transplant operations are expensive, so we must all keep up the fight to save the NHS from the Tory cuts.

Natasha Clarke Oldham

I am so glad MPs have voted in favour of changing the law on organ donation – and not before time. I think it is insane to let perfectly good organs rot or be burnt while there are people on the transplant list who are dying. I have been a donor for as long as I can remember and I think everybody should be one, but if you would like to opt out, that is your choice. However, if you are not prepared to give your own organs, what right do you have to get somebody else’s if the situation arose?

Paul Martin, Rotherham

I have followed your campaign to change the system for organ donation from the beginning and I am delighted that MPs have given their support for an opt-out system. It is also good news that the Bill is to make provision for respecting the wishes of families and next of kin. That means there can be no fear of people being bullied into something they have not agreed to. I, and I am sure, the majority of people in this country, welcome the changes which will save hundreds of lives.

Well done to all who campaigned for Max’s Law, but this is only the first battle won.

Now the next stage must be to obtain funding for all the extra transplants.

I was fortunate enough to have a renal transplant 12 years ago, so I know how vital this is.

The fight must go on.

R Fox Barnoldswick, Lancs

It is such great news that MPs have voted in favour of changing the rules on organ donation. The current system isn’t working because there simply aren’t enough people signing up on the donor register.

Well done to everyone who fought for this – it will make a huge difference to so many people’s lives.

Joanne Wilkins, Sheffield

Now MPs have voted to back Max’s Law, can I suggest that anyone who deciders to opt out should go to the bottom of the list if they need a transplant? This is only logical in my mind. If they are not willing to share their organs then they should not expect to receive any.

I am delighted at the successful outcome of the Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign. I am an organ donor and I like to think that when I am gone I help people.
