Engineering giant GKN is hoping a more than doubling in profits will convince shareholders to snub a £7.4billion takeover.

The firm, which makes technology for fighter jets and parts for cars, made £658m last year as annual sales broke through the £10bn mark for the first time.

Bosses hope the bumper results will win over investors targeted by corporate raider Melrose.
