Wenger & Co quick to put up white flag
A CLUE to how Arsenal would react to going behind against Manchester City in the League Cup final came in Arsene Wenger’s pre-match press conference.
The Frenchman claimed City are the best team in the land not because they have the best coach but because they’d been able to buy the best players.
Which is not just wrong, as Pep Guardiola’s coaching has taken most of that side to a higher level, it gave his own players an excuse to fail.
Why were they walking when they should have been running, as Gary Neville observed? Maybe because their boss had let it be known he sees them as inferior to their opponents, so he wouldn’t be hammering them once they were beaten.
I doubt Jurgen Klopp would have thought that, let alone said it, before he beat Guardiola in January.
Because the Liverpool boss believes in himself and his players, and his ability to mould a side capable of beating anyone regardless of reputation.
Wenger long ago lost that belief and reeks of defeatism. Suffer another humiliating one tonight and there is surely no way back.
