The Beast from the East and Storm Emma are expected to cause millions of pounds worth of damage, according to analysis from home insurer Policy Expert.

One in 10 households has had to claim for storm damage to roofs, fences and burst or damaged pipes in the past, at an average £905.

There are some quick things you can do to help protect your home.

If you haven’t done so, get your boiler and heating system checked and/or serviced. Give the roof a once over for cracked, missing or loose tiles and get them replaced.

Fill any cracks in window frames and ensure they have a decent coat of paint as extreme temperatures and wet can cause untreated wood to expand and rot.

And ensure guttering and drains are clear of debris such as leaves.

Lag pipes and water tanks in exposed areas such as lofts and get a registered electrician to check your home’s fuse box and wiring.

During winter months, keep your heating on and set it to a minimum 14 degrees Celsius to help prevent pipes freezing and frost damage.
