1996: Nigel Benn announced his retirement after losing the WBC super-middleweight title to South Africa’s Thulani ‘Sugarboy’ Malinga.

1998: With Manchester United 11 points ahead of Arsenal, a Manchester bookmaker paid out on United to take the title. Arsenal then recorded 10 wins in a row to become champions.

2004: Ken Bates stood down as Chelsea chairman after 22 years at the club.

2005: Ian Woosnam was confirmed as Ryder Cup captain for the 2006 event at The K Club in Ireland.
