MEG & HARRY: THE PEOPLE’S WEDDING
2,640 ‘ordinary’ Brits get invite
PRINCE Harry and Meghan Markle are inviting ordinary members of the public from across Britain to their wedding.
Kensington Palace announced yesterday 2,640 people will be asked into the grounds of Windsor Castle to be part of the celebrations.
They will be in pole position to watch the arrivals of the bride and groom and their 800 guests at St George’s Chapel for the nuptials of the year on May 19.
A spokesman for Harry, 33, and 36-year-old Meghan said: “The couple has asked that the people chosen are from a broad range of backgrounds and ages, including young people who have shown strong leadership, and those who have served their communities.
“This wedding, like all weddings, will be a moment of fun and joy that will reflect the characters and values of the bride and groom.
“They want the public to feel part of the celebrations too.” Those invited will be made up of 1,200 members of the public from all walks of life, 200 from charities, 100 pupils from Windsor schools, 610 castle community members and 530 royal households staff.
The charity staff and beneficiaries will include those from WellChild, which Harry has been patron of since 2007.
Chief executive Colin Dyer said: “We are delighted, but not surprised, they have decided that their wedding day is an occasion to be shared widely.” People from Harry’s Invictus Games Foundation will also be represented along with his charity Sentebale. Meghan will choose a small number of charities she supports.
The Queen’s Lord Lieutenants were yesterday instructed to find the public to invite.
Meghan’s first official engagement with the Queen will be at Westminster Abbey’s Commonwealth Service on March 12.
