DEENEY A DREAM TRAIN

- BY MIKE WALTERS

TROY DEENEY’S winner was the last straw for West Brom after their protracted efforts to sign him in January came to nothing.

And for Watford’s longserving captain, a third goal in four games suggests he is living up to his own billing in the matchday programme as a “freight train” – slow to work up a head of steam, but difficult to stop when he’s at full power.

Deeney said: “Transfer windows are a frustrating time as you have to sit and hold your tongue when people say things and they don’t know the full facts. I just want to get back into a run of scoring goals and try to get to double figures – seven years in a row wouldn’t be too bad for a so-called fat old lazy boy!

“I always say I’m a bit like a freight train – once I get going I’m all right, but you’ve got to get me going first.”

Around 200 fans reported at first light to clear the pitch, stands and walkways of snow at Vicarage Road, and defender Adrian Mariappa, making his 250th appearance for Watford, said: “This win is for them.”
