SOUTHGATE BLOW AS KID SCOTT PICKS SCOTLAND
MANCHESTER UNITED midfielder Scott McTominay has snubbed England.
Boss Gareth Southgate had hoped to persuade the midfielder to opt for the Three Lions.
But the 21-year-old (below) is understood to have chosen to play for Scotland. He qualifies through his Glaswegian father, Frank.
McTominay, who was born in Lancashire, has not represented either nation at any level,
so, ahead of the international break, could decide to play for either.
He met Scotland manager Alex McLeish at United’s training ground last week.
McTominay, who made his Reds debut last season, has been a revelation for Jose Mourinho’s side this campaign and has started the last three games.
Old Trafford boss Mourinho had urged the youth team graduate to forget about international football and focus on his club career.
He said last week: “My advice to him is not about national teams, my advice is to keep the way he is, which is very humble, very open to learn, intelligent, and to keep going in the same direction, with the same profile, trying to fight to have minutes with Manchester United, which is not easy.
“And then the national team will be just a consequence of his work at the club.”
