Wearing pyjamas in hospital is bad for elderly patients as it hinders their recovery, says Public Health England.

It also found three out of five had no medical reason that required bed rest – and believes doubling the amount of walking while in hospital reduces the length of stay.

Almost half of over-85s die within a year of admission.

Prof Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England, said: “For many, wearing pyjamas reinforces feeling unwell and can prevent a speedy recovery. Getting people up and dressed is a vital step in ensuring they do not spend any longer in hospital than is clinically necessary.”

Difficulty switching off in our “always on” culture has been linked to a range of health problems.

Sleep is one the few remaining respites, but new research shows a third of us even dream about work.

A poll of 2,000 people by online jobs board Totaljobs showed we’re more likely to dream about work (34%) than we are about relationsh­ips (31%) or wealth (18%). And 21% admitted to dreaming about being in a work relationsh­ip while 23% had nightmares about being late or sacked.

Sainsbury’s has been praised after helping a woman diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s continue at work.

Many of the estimated 40,000 under-65s living with the devastatin­g condition have felt the need to quit shortly after diagnosis.

The heartwarmi­ng tale emerged on Twitter where her son Doron Salomon revealed how managers provided regular retraining, changed her hours and held regular welfare meetings for his mum.

Hilary Evans, chief of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “It’s important for employers to be aware of the challenges dementia may pose, and to consider whether a role could be adjusted.”
