HULK REFUSES TO SULK

-

How inspiring to hear BBC presenter Bill Turnbull talk publicly about his prostate cancer.

The disease has spread to his bones and he’s been given between 10 and 14 years to live.

But even more powerful than the revelation of his cancer, is his honesty around it.

He described how it had made him, “A bit shorter of temper, where you can feel your inner Hulk bursting to get out”. And who could be surprised? I remember visiting the amazing, smart and hilarious Sue Carroll, who used to write this column, shortly after she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. “I’m just angry,” she said. “So f***ing angry.” And I’d never heard a more plausible response to such a devastating diagnosis. Cancer isn’t a battle or a journey. It’s just a totally s**t illness – and the sooner we have the science to destroy it, the better.
