We reported on the sinking of British car ferry the Herald of Free Enterprise soon after it left the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. Some 193 passengers and crew drowned. An inquiry found the ship had left its bow door open.

The German Army marched into the Rhineland in violation of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles which had establishe­d a demilitari­sed zone in the region.

53 YEARS AGO (1965)

Seventeen civil rights demonstrat­ors needed hospital treatment in Selma, Alabama, after state troopers attacked marchers protesting against violations of the voting rights of black citizens.
