‘Watt did you say?’ Baffled ref sees red

- BY LOUIE SMITH

A REFEREE sent off footballer Sanchez Watt after confusion over his name.

Dean Hulme asked the forward his surname while booking him and thought he was replying “What?”

When he then repeated “Watt! Watt!” the ref treated it as dissent and issued a red card.

He reversed his decision on realising his mistake.

Ex Arsenal and Leeds player Watt, 27, of East London, was playing for non-league Hemel Hempstead Town at the time.

He said: “He thought I was taking the mickey. I said ‘You can’t send me off for saying my name’.”

Hemel won the National League South match against East Thurrock United 2-0. Club chairman Dave Boggins said: “Everybody found it amusing.”
