Couple freed after 9 days in snow hell

- BY CHRIS RICHES

A COUPLE are recovering after 12ft snowdrifts left them trapped in their home for nine days.

Gwen and Stan Hill were rescued after blowers finally arrived in Nenthead, Cumbria, on Thursday.

Gwen, 57, said: “No vehicles could get to us. Luckily our neighbours brought us provisions on foot!

“I used to love snow but I don’t want to see it again.”

As the drifts got deeper, Stan, also 57, made a Facebook appeal and contacted the county council, which arranged the rescue op.

The couple were also rescued during the Great Storm of 1987, as the RNLI raced to their struggling catamaran south of Portland Bill, off the coast of Dorset.

Gwen said: “We seem to be fated by the weather.”
