A YOUNG woman has become the fourth generation of her family to walk the beat as a police officer.

Rhiannon Griffiths, 22, was inspired to join the force after hearing thrilling bedtime stories as a girl.

She is now the fourth Constable Griffiths in a row - following her father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Rhiannon, who works for Dyfed Powys Police, said: “I remember when it was story time, my dad would read some nursery books.

“But then he would tell me about his job and what he did as a police officer, or he’d be rushing off to work and it all sounded so exciting.

“The older I got, the more interested I was in joining and I just felt like I had to give it a go.”

The family story began in 1928 when great-grandfather David Haydn Griffiths worked for Carmarthenshire Constabulary in Llanelli, South Wales.

Rhiannon’s grandad Ray Griffiths was then a PC with the Glamorgan Constabulary from 1951 to 1981.

And dad Marc Griffiths carried on the tradition when he spent 30 years with South Wales Police before retiring in 2008. Rhiannon will start her role as a PC this month after finishing training.

Rhiannon said: “I’m really looking forward to starting but I’m nervous too.

“It will be putting all the work we have done into practice now and taking it a stage further.”
