The Reds take a 0-0 draw into the decisive last-16 tie with Sevilla, with Mourinho desperate for United to keep alive their chances of silverware this season by progressing against them and Brighton.

“Sevilla and Brighton are more important games than Liverpool,” said Mourinho.

“Liverpool was Liverpool, it was a big match, a match against a direct competitor for the top four, but nothing is decided yet. We have eight more games and 24 points to play for. But Seville and Brighton are live-or-die games so the next two are much more important.”

The win over Liverpool continued a fine run for United, who have also beaten Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea this season, but Mourinho said such victories count for little in the increasingly pressurised modern game. “It says nothing,” said Mourinho (right). “I can imagine that if we lose against Sevilla everyone will have forgotten what we did in the last couple of weeks.”
