Fiery Matt roasts Beef

- FROM NEIL McLEMAN

MATT WALLACE saw off Andrew Johnston with two stunning strikes to claim the Hero Indian Open in a thrilling play-off.

The two English stars were locked on 11 under par after 72 holes before the sudden-death shoot-out in New Delhi.

While Beef (right) laid up on the par-five 18th and saw his birdie putt lip out, Wallace hit a monster drive and a four-iron on to the green and had two putts to seal his second European Tour title.

Wallace, who shot a closing 68, said: “I’m ecstatic. I just played some amazing golf. I thought I might have been a few more clear, but Beef had a great round today.

“I hit some really good shots in that play-off. I pumped it down there on the last and it went a long way. Then the four iron went even further than I thought it would, so I was jacked up a bit.

“To hit two shots like that is exactly why I play the game.

“Beef’s putt on the last should have gone in – but it’s just been my day.” Beef, who finished last year at world No.171, will climb the rankings but is still looking for his second European Tour title after his final-round of 66.

“I feel good as I played very well today,” he said.

“Last year was tough but this year’s start has been good.”

Race To Dubai leader and home favourite Shubhankar Sharma, who shared the overnight lead with Wallace, carded three double-bogeys in his 75 to finish tied for seventh.
