1938: The BBC televised its first athletics meeting when it covered the annual Oxford v Cambridge match.
1991: Wendy Toms made history as the first woman to officiate at a Football League game. She was reserve official for a Third Division match between Bournemouth and Reading.
2000: Forty-one-year-old Neville Southall appeared in goal for Bradford after regular goalkeeper Matt Clarke fell down the stairs at home.
2006: South Africa and Australia both broke the world record one-day international score. Batting first at Johannesburg, Australia’s 434 for four was beaten by their hosts’ seriesclinching 438 for nine (Herschelle Gibbs 175, above).
