1873: The Scottish FA was formed when representa­tives from eight clubs met at Glasgow’s Dewar’s Hotel.

1948: The Lincolnshi­re Handicap drew a field of 58 horses - the largest number of runners for a flat race in Britain.

1967: Former West Indies cricket captain Sir Frank Worrell, who scored 3,860 runs in 51 Test appearance­s, died at the age of 42.

1991: Ronnie O’Sullivan became the youngest player to compile a maximum 147 break aged 15 years and 98 days at the English Amateur Snooker Championsh­ip.

2002: Everton terminated the contract of manager Walter Smith (left).
