Tory shame as services destroyed

- BYJOHN McDONNELL, SHADOW CHANCELLOR

THE Chancellor could have used his Spring Statement to end austerity and provide the funding our public services vitally need.

But instead he chose to continue with his brutal spending cuts and billions of pounds in tax giveaways to the big firms and super-rich.

The Chancellor’s boasting on the economy was truly breathtaking when you consider the Tories have presided over the slowest recovery since the 1920s.

You wouldn’t have heard him repeat the claim the UK is the fastest-growing economy in the G7, because we are now the slowest. Nor did he mention real wages are set to be downgraded in every year from 2020.

Tory Chancellors like to say that austerity is needed to tackle the deficit. But it still hasn’t been eliminated.

In reality, the Tories have just shifted the burden on to the public services, plunging them into crisis.

Only the next Labour Government will end austerity and build the highwage, high-skill economy for the many, not the few.
