Our front page carried photos of the 16 children and one teacher shot dead and the 12 wounded at Dunblane Primary School by Thomas Hamilton, who turned the gun on himself after the deadliest mass shooting in British history.

54 YEARS AGO (1964)

Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby was found guilty of murdering Lee Harvey Oswald, JFK’s alleged assassin, and sentenced to death. The verdict was later overturned.

58 YEARS AGO (1960)

The radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire, set a new space record after making contact with the US Pioneer V satellite 407,000 miles away. Built in 1957, it was the world’s largest steerable radio telescope. Renamed the Lovell Telescope in 1987, it is still operationa­l today and is open to the public.
