Our front page car­ried pho­tos of the 16 chil­dren and one teacher shot dead and the 12 wounded at Dun­blane Pri­mary School by Thomas Hamil­ton, who turned the gun on him­self af­ter the dead­li­est mass shoot­ing in Bri­tish his­tory.

54 YEARS AGO (1964)

Dal­las night­club owner Jack Ruby was found guilty of mur­der­ing Lee Har­vey Oswald, JFK’s al­leged as­sas­sin, and sen­tenced to death. The ver­dict was later over­turned.

58 YEARS AGO (1960)

The ra­dio tele­scope at Jo­drell Bank, Cheshire, set a new space record af­ter mak­ing con­tact with the US Pi­o­neer V satel­lite 407,000 miles away. Built in 1957, it was the world’s largest steer­able ra­dio tele­scope. Re­named the Lovell Tele­scope in 1987, it is still op­er­a­tional to­day and is open to the pub­lic.
