Shell and WHSmith join the Mirror u16 energy drink ban
SHELL and WHSmith have barred sales of energy drinks to under-16s, in another victory for our campaign.
The forecourt giant and high street chain join supermarkets and chemist Boots in taking the step, backed by chef Jamie Oliver.
Shell will require buyers who look under-age to show ID from today. Its retail chief Bernadette Williamson said: “Energy drinks already carry a warning. We are making this further move to ensure that we are selling these products in a responsible way.” Children’s Commissioner for England Anne Longfield urged convenience stores to follow suit. While Do The Right Thing With Eamonn and Ruth hears how a girl had six energy drinks a day from age 11.
Beth Game, 19, collapsed at 15 with an abnormally fast heart rate. She tells Channel 5’s show tonight: “I was completely out of it.”
