PSG ON ALERT AS JOSE FACES OLD TRAFFORD CASH BATTLE

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

JOSE MOURINHO is on a collision course with the Manchester United hierarchy over his spending plans.

In the wake of United’s Champions League exit to Sevilla, Mourinho (above) claimed United must match the financial outlay of their European rivals if they are to compete for the biggest prizes.

And that will alert Paris Saint-Germain, who are on the look out for a new boss. The

United manager believes the club have been too frugal in their outlay, particularly compared to local rivals Manchester City.

But the Old Trafford hierarchy have already backed Mourinho to the tune of nearly £300million over two years and believe that should have taken the club further than where they currently are.

That difference of opinion could lead to tensions between the manager and the board, with PSG not having given up hope of luring the Portuguese this summer.

Although Mourinho recently extended his contract until 2020, if PSG believe they can take advantage of any discord at United, they will do all they can to exploit it.

Asked what must change in the wake of the club’s Champions League exit, the United boss said: “Everything. Everything has to change.

“Everybody spends money, right? Not just us, no? It’s a natural process, every team invests.”

Mourinho has already griped publicly about City’s willingness to spend whatever it takes to allow their squad to compete at the highest level.

While City lavished £130m on three specialist full-backs last summer in Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Danilo, United are operating with wingers at the back in Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young.

Although Mourinho will be allowed to spend big this summer on Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale and Jean Michael Seri of Nice, United’s board are unwilling to hand him the vast sums he says he needs.
