BBC Antiques Roadshow in Buckfast row

- BY ELLIE FORBES

THE BBC has been urged to ditch plans to film the Antiques Roadshow at Buckfast Abbey amid fears it may promote the drink.

Host Fiona Bruce will head to Devon to mark the historic site’s 1,000-year anniversary in September.

But it is the birthplace of Buckfast, a tonic wine with high alcohol and caffeine content.

The drink has been associated with antisocial behaviour in Scotland, where it is especially popular.

Ex-Scottish Health Secretary Alex Neil urged the BBC to change location and said: “My concern is this programme could be used, even inadvertently, to advertise Buckfast.”

BBC sources insisted there would be no on-air promotion of the product.
