Rory just can’t Elk but suffer

-

THE odds for Tiger Woods to win the Masters next month are now considerably shorter than they are for Rory McIlroy.

And you would have got long odds for that a year ago.

Steve Elkington might have had a punt. Elkington, who won the 1995 US PGA Championship, is a bit of an Aussie loudmouth, occasionally sounding off on minor TV programmes and in social media.

It was on Twitter he wound up McIlroy after the Irishman missed the cut in last year’s US Open.

“Rory is so bored playing golf... without Tiger the threshold is prolly four Majors with 100mill in bank.”

Not the finest bit or writing but you get the drift.

It should not have been dignified with a response but McIlroy (above) replied: “More like 200mil...not bad for a ‘bored’ 28-year-old.”

Since then, McIlroy’s results read: 17, 117, MC (Missed Cut), 4, 5, 22, 34, MC, 58, 2, 63, 3, 2, MC, 20, 59, MC.

McIlroy can now respond to two unforeseen changes on his golfing landscape and knuckle down, despite the gargantuan bank balance.

1) Tiger Woods is more fancied to win a Major than him. 2) He is no longer the biggest box-office draw. Nowhere near.

If he does not rise to the challenge, some people might start thinking the Elk had a point.
