ST HELENS coach Justin Holbrook admits young half-back Danny Richardson has surprised him with his sparkling form.

Holbrook was unsure how the playmaker would slot in, but tough tackling Richardson (above, right) has emerged as one of the stars of the season.

Holbrook said: “In pre-season I thought he could be a stand-off who just touches the ball once in a set of six and lets someone else organise the team. But he just got his nose in front of Matty Smith after the friendlies and he hasn’t put a foot wrong.”
