Menopause bone boost by Med diet
A MEDITERRANEAN diet could benefit bones and muscle in menopausal women, research suggests.
Scientists found a higher mass of both in those who ate lots of fruit, vegetables, grains, olive oil and seeds.
Regular but moderate drinking of red wine was also found to be beneficial.
Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, studied 103 postmenopausal women.
A higher Mediterranean diet score was significantly associated with greater bone mineral density and muscle mass. Oestrogen decline during menopause speeds up bone mass loss.
Author Dr Thais Rasia da Silva said: “The diet could be a useful strategy for the prevention of osteoporosis and fractures.”
