Fired worker in £150k act of vin-dalism

- BY PETER ALLEN

A MAN sacked by a French vineyard for fighting returned and opened up two tanks, spilling 33,000 bottles’ worth of wine into the ground as “revenge”.

Tractors were also vandalised and buildings damaged by fire in the £150,000 attack at the Chateau Landereau vineyard in the Bordeaux area.

The unnamed man, got a 15-month suspended jail term after a court heard he “went mad” after drinking a bottle of whisky.

He had told police: “I was full of hatred, I got drunk because they took me for a piece of manure and – yes – I wanted to harm those who hurt me.”

He denied starting fires but said he had tampered with electrics, which may have short-circuited and set the outbuildings alight.
