We told of one of the “deadliest disasters in American history” when a leaking oil pipeline under a school in Texas exploded. Up to 640 pupils of New London High School were feared dead. The toll was later confirmed at 295.
36 YEARS AGO (1982)
50 Argentines landed on the Falkland Islands and planted their flag, marking the start of the conflict over the islands, which have been British since 1833.
42 YEARS AGO (1976)
A statement from Buckingham Palace announced that Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon were to separate after 16 years of marriage, after speculation about her affair with Roddy Llewellyn.
