Eccleston: My accent cost me TV Crown
CHRISTOPHER Eccleston believes class prejudice at the BBC cost him a role in the Hollow Crown series.
The Salford-born actor said: “There’s an assumption being made about my accent and background.”
Eccleston, 54, added: “Without sounding arrogant, I’m a high-profile actor and didn’t get a call – didn’t get an audition.”
The ex-Doctor Who said of the adaptations of Shakespeare history plays: “Why didn’t somebody like myself get offered a lead?”
The actor also criticised the Royal Shakespeare Company in Radio Times, saying: “My hackles rise because I just see a sea of white faces. This place has got to have a revolution. No more English Heritage.”
The BBC declined to comment last night.
