Shopping centre giant Hammerson has rejected a £5billion takeover approach from French rival Klepierre. Hammerson, which owns Birmingham’s Bullring and a host of retail parks, called the move “entirely opportunis­tic”.

A publicity-shy investor has snapped-up a more than 5% stake in Barclays. Edward Bramson, who runs Guernsey-based outfit Sherborne, is known as an “activist” for demanding big changes in firms he backs. The move will pile pressure on Barclays’ boss Jes Staley.

Nearly two in five people still use the same bank their parents chose for them, according to research by TSB.

Burglaries jump by nearly a quarter when the clocks go forward, data from the Co-op found. The majority of home thefts over the summer are on Fridays, with Sundays the safest, it said. The clocks change this coming Sunday.
