Unite’s Formby to run Labour
UNITE union stalwart Jennie Formby was last night named Labour’s top official.
Ms Formby, who succeeds Iain McNicol as general secretary, was chosen ahead of her only rival, former NUT leader Christine Blower. Ms Formby said: “Labour is preparing for government.”
Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said her “talent, experience and commitment to the Labour and trade union movement will play a crucial role in taking our party forward to victory”.
Grandmother Ms Formby, 57, is the first female general secretary since Margaret McDonagh who left in 2001.
