Gervais blast at conviction for ‘Nazi dog’
RICKY Gervais has defended a man found guilty over teaching his girlfriend’s pet dog to give a Nazi salute.
Mark Meechan, 30, got the pug owned by Suzanne Kelly, 29, to raise a paw to the words “gas the Jews” and fascist chant “Sieg Heil” on a YouTube video.
He was convicted of sending a grossly offensive, obscene or menacing internet message.
But comedian Gervais, 56, said: “If you don’t believe in the right to say things you find grossly offensive, you don’t believe in freedom of speech.”
Outside Airdrie sheriff court, North Lanarkshire, Meechan, of Coatbridge, called the verdict a “huge miscarriage of justice”.
He will be sentenced in a month’s time.
