Alfie Evans parents lose bid to appeal end of treatment
THE parents of seriously ill toddler Alfie Evans have lost their latest battle to stop his life support being turned off.
The Supreme Court yesterday rejected their bid for a new hearing.
Now Tom Evans, 21, and Kate James, 20, must decide on going to the European Court of Human Rights in a final attempt to overturn the decision to stop Alfie’s treatment.
Their solicitor Mary Holmes, who broke the news to them last night, said: “We’re all bitterly disappointed.” Tom and Emma, of Liverpool, had hoped the Supreme Court would let them appeal a High Court ruling that medics at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital could stop treating their 22-month-old son. Alfie is in a “semi-vegetative state” and has a degenerative nerve condition. His parents want to take him abroad for treatment.
