WORKING out how to deal with Vladimir Putin is tricky for any international leader yet EC President Jean-Claude Juncker’s “every success” letter of congratulation to Russia’s Tsar was toe-curling.

Theresa May might be guilty over the Salisbury spy poisoning of acting without thinking ahead clearly but the EU’s chief bureaucrat is an embarrassment.

He damages the EU and the case for Britain remaining close to its nearest neighbours almost every time he opens his mouth.

The tit-for-tat expulsion of diplomats by London and Moscow achieves little and our allies understandably qualify their support for May. But Juncker’s greeting is nauseating.
