SOUR TASTE OF ‘SPIKED LEMONS’

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

SPAIN have threatened to sue Malta after allegations the minnows were drugged before losing 12-1 in 1983.

Malta’s goalscorer Silvio Demanuele also claimed Spain took performanceenhancing drugs in the Euro qualifier.

Spain needed to win by 11 goals to overtake Holland and make Euro 84 on goals scored. Demanuele claims Malta were given spiked lemons at half-time in Seville, with Spain star Santillana getting four goals after the break.

“When I sucked on those lemons I felt drunk, as if I’d been out partying all night,” said Demanuele. “The energy Spain had wasn’t normal. Some of them were foaming at the mouth.”

The Spanish FA warned “it had the right to take legal action against those who try to smear the good image of Spanish football”.
