Give Army’s first black officer the Military Cross, MPs urge

- BY JASON BEATTIE Head of Politics

A BLACK war hero should be posthumously awarded the Military Cross, more than 100 MPs have demanded.

Walter Tull was overlooked for the honour despite his bravery on the Western Front in the Great War, they say in a letter to the PM.

The ex-Spurs player was the British Army’s first black officer.

He fought in six battles, including the Somme, and led a BRAVERY Second Lieutenant Tull daring raid into enemy territory in Italy. Tull, who rose to the rank of second lieutenant, was recommended the Military Cross but campaigners say he was denied it due to institutional racism. He was killed in action in 1918 at 29. To mark the 100th anniversary of his death, MPs from six parties have written to Theresa May to “right the wrong”. David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, North London, called Walter “a true British hero”.
