Owen Smith sacked ‘over Brexit views’
OWEN Smith was sacked from Labour’s front bench yesterday after clashing with leader Jeremy Corbyn.
The Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary was axed in a 6pm phone call after demanding Labour call for a second Brexit vote.
He said he was fired for telling the “damage” Brexit will do to the economy and Good Friday Agreement.
He added: “Those views are shared by Labour members and I’ll continue to speak up for them.”
Ex-Northern Ireland Secretary Lord Hain accused Mr Corbyn of a “terrible Stalinist purge”.
Labour MP Anna Turley called it “disappointing”.
Ex-minister Tony Lloyd will replace Mr Smith.
Dan Jarvis was last night chosen as Labour’s candidate for Mayor of Sheffield.
