Cancer fight George ‘has 10% chance’

- BY MARK JEFFERIES Showbiz Editor

THE BBC’s George Alagiah has advanced bowel cancer and his chances of living five more years are less than 10%, he has revealed.

The newsreader, 62, was diagnosed in 2014 and had 17 rounds of chemotherapy plus five operations as the disease spread.

A call to say the cancer had returned came two hours before he was due on News at Six in December, but he went ahead “on autopilot”.

George told of “wobbly moments” at the thought of leaving behind his wife of 33 years Frances and their sons, aged 31 and 27.

He is backing charities’ fighting for screening for all from 50, as in Scotland.

George would have had checks “at least three times” by the age at which his illness was spotted.
