A TORY vow to repair Britain’s potholes has been slammed after it emerged that just £100million of the £9billion needed was pledged.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling will today promise funds that he says will mend two million potholes.

Councils warn that is just a fraction of the cash required to fix our roads.

Mr Grayling said a “prolonged spell of freezing weather” had caused the damage. He said giving councils more money would mean “all road users can enjoy their journeys without having to dodge potholes”. But Martin Tett, of the Local Government Association said the funding would “provide just over 1% of what is needed to tackle our £9.3billion local roads repair backlog”. Labour’s Roberta Blackman-Woods said: “The Tories can’t swerve responsibility. Huge cuts have left local authorities struggling to look after our roads.” The row comes after the Asphalt Industry Alliance said 20% of roads in England and Wales will wear out within five years.
