TEAM IS OUT OF CONTROL SAYS DIZZY

- BY HECTOR NUNNS

JASON GILLESPIE believes Steve Smith failed to realise how much trouble he was in after dropping his cheating bombshell.

And the bowling legend who took 259 Test wickets fears the Australia team is now seen as out of control – and could be wrecked by bans and suspensions.

‘Dizzy’ Gillespie (below), now head coach at Sussex, said: “What we saw with Steve Smith’s press conference, it appeared to me he did not grasp the gravity of the situation.

“It was an admission of a preconceived plan to cheat in our sport and an admission that, yes, we tried to take an advantage by doing the wrong thing. We knew it was wrong and we still made that conscious decision to go down that path and that is the most telling thing in this sorry state of affairs.

“It is very shocking, very saddening and incredibly disappointing.

“It is hard to see how Steve Smith can continue as captain of Australia or how David Warner can continue as vicecaptain. And until we hear from Darren Lehmann we won’t know more on him.

“But it is hard to imagine there isn’t going to be a fallout and a big change in personnel. It appears there will be some big changes on and off the field.

“It is still a shock, the footage we saw was damning and pretty conclusive.

“We need clarity about who was in this leadership group Smith mentioned. Because at least one senior player is apparently mortified to have been drawn into this. You assume it is the captain and vice-captain – and maybe the coach, but Smith said the coach was not part of it.”
