1863: The first steeplechase under National Hunt rules took place at Market Harborough in Leicestershire.
1959: Mushtaq Mohammad, aged 15 years and 124 days, made his Test cricket debut for Pakistan against the West Indies at Lahore. He was the youngest person to play Test cricket, a record that stood until 1996.
2002: Kenneth Wolstenholme’s death was announced. The 81-year-old is remembered for his “They think it’s all over – it is now” line of the 1966 World Cup final.
2008: David Beckham won his 100th England cap (above) in a 1-0 friendly defeat to France in Paris.
2009: Tennis star Kim Clijsters reversed her decision to retire.
