1871: The first international rugby match took place at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh, between England and Scotland, with the latter winning.
1988: England, Liverpool and Tottenham goalkeeper Ray Clemence, 39, announced he would retire.
1989: Referee Kelvin Morton awarded a record five penalties in the Second Division match between Crystal Palace and Brighton. Only two were converted, one by each side, and Palace won 2-1.
2015: Tottenham striker Harry Kane scored 80 seconds into his England debut (above) as Roy Hodgson’s side beat Lithuania 4-0 at Wembley.
