Coach Tite fielded a strong side to ensure there would be no repeat of the 7-1 humiliation in 2014. And Manchester City’s Jesus (left), now back in his stride after a long injury lay-off, headed the only goal on 37 minutes to seal victory.

Germany keeper Kevin Trapp won’t want to see it again. Jesus’s diving header was parried up in the air by Trapp who fell backwards and watched the ball fall over the line on top of him as he tried in vain to bat it out.

Trapp made some amends in the second half to deny Brazil, thwarting two efforts by Paulinho.
