1890: Blackburn’s William Townley became the first man to score a hat-trick in an FA Cup final as Rovers trounced Sheffield Wednesday 6-1.
1980: Three-time world champion Nelson Piquet won his first Formula One Grand Prix, in the United States at Long Beach.
1981: The first London Marathon was staged. Britain’s Joyce Smith won the women’s race while the men’s title was shared by American Dick Beardsley and Norwegian Inge Simonsen, who crossed the line hand in hand.
2008: Derby were relegated from the Premier League with a record low total of 11 points following just one win.
