Tories ditch benefit cuts on the quiet

- BY MIKEY SMITH Political Reporter

WELFARE Secretary Esther McVey sneaked out a U-turn on housing benefit cuts on the last day before the Easter break.

In a written statement she said rules introduced by George Osborne blocking 18 to 21 year olds from claiming housing benefit would be scrapped.

Officials had said the cuts would save taxpayers £105million by 2020.

But the Department for Work and Pensions had to introduce so many exceptions it affected 90 people in the first three months.

Young people can sign the work support package Youth Obligation to claim.

Labour MP Frank Field said: “This shows the Government is willing to change a policy that risked pushing vulnerable young people into destitution.”
